The Red Sea has been celebrated for decades as one of the world's premier diving destinations, its Egyptian and Jordanian coastlines drawing millions of divers to their celebrated reefs. But along the eastern shore of this extraordinary body of water, an even more spectacular diving destination has remained almost entirely unexplored — until now. Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coastline, stretching over 1,800 kilometres from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Yemeni border, represents one of the world's last great underwater frontiers: pristine, barely dived, and almost incomparably rich in marine life.

Why Saudi Arabia's Red Sea is Different
The Saudi Red Sea shares the same geological origins as the Egyptian Red Sea — both are part of the same body of water, fed by the same currents, and home to broadly the same species assemblage. But the Saudi coast offers something the Egyptian coast can no longer claim: genuine wilderness.
- Zero diving pressure: While the Egyptian Red Sea receives over one million dive visits per year, the Saudi coast has received a tiny fraction of that — decades of restricted access have left the reefs essentially undisturbed.
- Pristine coral: Saudi Arabia's reefs have escaped the anchor damage, diver contact, and pollution that have degraded sections of the Egyptian Red Sea. Massive coral formations — centuries old — remain completely intact.
- Abundant marine life: Without decades of fishing and diver pressure, fish biomass on Saudi reefs is exceptional. Large grouper, napoleon wrasse, and reef shark populations that have been reduced elsewhere remain fully present here.
- Unexplored sites: Many of the dive sites along the Saudi coast have never been dived by recreational divers. Every expedition has the potential for genuine discovery.
The Saudi Red Sea Marine Environment
The Red Sea is one of the world's most geologically young ocean basins and one of its most biodiverse. Its geographic isolation — connected to the global ocean only through the narrow Bab-el-Mandeb strait — has driven extraordinary speciation, with a high proportion of endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. Saudi Arabia's section of the Red Sea shares all these characteristics:
- Visibility routinely exceeding 20-30 metres
- Water temperatures of 22-32°C depending on season and depth
- Extraordinary coral diversity with over 200 species of hard coral recorded
- 20% of Red Sea fish species are endemic — found nowhere else in the world
- Dramatic underwater topography including walls, pinnacles, and caves
Key Diving Regions
- The Northern Saudi Coast (near Tabuk and Sharma): The most developed area for diving access, with transparent waters and coral gardens rivalling the best of the Maldives. NEOM's protected marine areas are creating extraordinary conservation zones.
- Jeddah and the Central Coast: The most accessible region for visiting divers, with established dive operations and excellent offshore reef diving within easy reach of the city.
- The Farasan Islands (Southern Saudi): The most remote and arguably the most spectacular region — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with genuinely pristine reefs and exceptional wildlife. Accessible only by liveaboard expedition.
Best Time to Dive Saudi Arabia
- October to April: The optimal diving season — cooler air temperatures (25-30°C), comfortable water temperatures (22-26°C), and the best sea conditions. DUNE's Saudi programs are scheduled primarily during this window.
- May to September: Summer brings extreme heat on the surface (40°C+) and warmer water (28-32°C). Diving is still excellent but surface conditions are challenging. Not recommended for most visitors.
