Your Complete Mexico Diving Planning Guide
Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and Riviera Maya offer one of the world's most versatile diving destinations — a concentrated collection of extraordinary underwater environments ranging from Caribbean coral reefs to underground cenote systems, and a year-round calendar of wildlife encounters from bull sharks to whale sharks. Planning well transforms an already excellent destination into an extraordinary one.
DUNE has been bringing divers to Mexico for many years. Here is our comprehensive guide to planning your perfect Mexican diving adventure.
The Three Signature Mexico Diving Experiences
- Bull Sharks (November-March): Female bull sharks congregate off Playa del Carmen in warm winter waters. January and February are peak months for maximum shark density and the best overall diving conditions of the year.
- Whale Sharks (June-September): The world's largest known whale shark aggregation occurs near Isla Holbox and Isla Mujeres. July and August offer peak concentrations in snorkelling encounters.
- Cenotes (Year-round): The underground cenote world is accessible throughout the year and can be combined with any season's wildlife program.
Best Time to Visit for Different Experiences
- November to March (Bull Shark Season): The dry season delivers outstanding diving conditions — excellent visibility on Caribbean reefs, calm seas, and the extraordinary bull shark encounters. Also the best season for cenote diving. DUNE's recommendation for divers prioritising diving quality and wildlife encounters.
- July to August (Whale Shark Season): Peak whale shark aggregation combined with excellent reef and cenote diving. Higher humidity and afternoon thunderstorms, but diving conditions remain excellent.
- October: An excellent transition month — end of wet season, beginning of bull shark build-up, improving conditions, and good value on accommodation.
Where to Base Yourself
- Playa del Carmen: DUNE's recommended base for most diving itineraries. The vibrant main town with excellent infrastructure, proximity to the best cenotes, ferry access to Cozumel, and the base for bull shark operations. Accommodation ranges from budget hostels to luxury boutique hotels.
- Tulum: Ideal for cenote-focused itineraries, with unbeatable proximity to Dos Ojos, The Pit, and Angelita. More relaxed and eco-oriented atmosphere.
- Isla Holbox: A beautiful car-free island, ideal for whale shark season. Limited accommodation but exceptional atmosphere.
Getting to Mexico's Riviera Maya
Cancun International Airport (CUN) receives direct flights from most major European cities, including Paris (Air France), London (British Airways, TUI), Madrid (Iberia), and Amsterdam (KLM). Flight time from Europe is approximately 10-12 hours. DUNE manages all flight and transfer logistics for our Mexico clients.
Dive Certifications and Requirements
- Reef and cenote (cavern) diving: Open Water certification and above.
- Bull shark diving: Advanced Open Water recommended (dives to 25-30 metres).
- Cave diving (beyond cavern zones): Full cave diving certification required.
- Nitrox: Available everywhere; strongly recommended for deeper sites.
Health and Practical Preparations
- No visa required for most European nationalities; tourist card issued on arrival.
- No specialist health preparations required for the Riviera Maya.
- Travel insurance: Essential — ensure your policy covers diving and emergency recompression treatment.
- Reef-safe sunscreen: Mandatory in the Tulum Biosphere Reserve; DUNE recommends using reef-safe products throughout the Riviera Maya.
