Cozumel: The Caribbean's Drift Diving Capital
Cozumel, Mexico's largest Caribbean island, is legendary among drift divers worldwide. The Cozumel Channel acts as a natural conduit for Caribbean currents flowing consistently along the island's western wall, creating ideal drift diving conditions that thrill experienced divers and introduce beginners to the exhilarating pleasure of flying through crystal-clear water alongside extraordinary reef life.
Cozumel's reef system was declared a National Marine Park in 1996 and is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System — the world's second-largest barrier reef. The protection has paid dividends: Cozumel's coral coverage and fish biomass are among the highest in the Caribbean.
- Palancar Reef: Cozumel's most famous dive site — a series of pinnacles and canyon systems draped in mountainous star coral and massive brain corals, with resident eagle rays, sea turtles, and Caribbean reef sharks.
- Santa Rosa Wall: An impressive wall dropping from 15 to 35+ metres, swept by current and decorated with enormous sponges and gorgonian fans.
- Columbia Deep: An advanced drift dive site featuring dramatic geological formations and one of the highest Caribbean reef shark encounter rates in the Cozumel system.
- Devil's Throat: A technical specialty — swim-throughs beginning at 25 metres exiting at 40+ metres into open ocean. Extraordinary for those qualified.
Playa del Carmen: Reef Diving and Bull Sharks
While Cozumel is accessed by ferry from Playa del Carmen, PDC itself offers excellent reef diving directly offshore. The local reef system features a diverse community of Caribbean reef fish, healthy hard coral structures, and the famous bull shark site accessible during winter months. Tulum: Cenotes and Coastal Reefs
Tulum, 100 kilometres south of Playa del Carmen, is the gateway to the greatest concentration of accessible cenotes in the Yucatan. The town itself — perched on a cliff above the Caribbean beside a dramatically positioned Mayan ruin — is one of Mexico's most beautiful destinations.
Caribbean Marine Life
- Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus perezi) — abundant at Cozumel and offshore sites
- Spotted eagle rays — common on sandy bottoms and reef slopes throughout the region
- Green and hawksbill sea turtles — resident and regularly encountered at all major sites
- Nassau grouper, tiger grouper, and goliath grouper at protected sites
- Moray eels, lionfish, and scorpionfish
- Splendid toadfish — a Mexican Cozumel endemic found nowhere else on Earth
Diving Conditions
- Water temperature: 26-29°C year-round; a 3mm wetsuit is comfortable in most months.
- Visibility: 15-30 metres typically; Cozumel during dry season can exceed 40 metres.
- Currents: Variable; Cozumel's drift currents can be strong on exposed sites.
- Best season: November to May (dry season) for best visibility; June to September adds whale shark opportunities.
Getting to Mexico's Caribbean Diving
Cancun International Airport (CUN) is the primary entry point, with excellent direct connections from Europe.
