Saudi Arabia Diving with DUNE: A Pioneer's Guide
Saudi Arabia's emergence as an international diving destination is one of the most exciting developments in dive travel of the past decade. The Kingdom's Vision 2030 initiative has opened its extraordinary coastline to international visitors for the first time in generations, revealing Red Sea reefs of unparalleled pristine quality that are genuinely transforming the ambitions of serious diving travellers.
DUNE is among the pioneering French travel agencies to develop dedicated Saudi Arabia diving programs, and our expertise in this new destination allows us to offer our clients both the best diving experiences currently available and the logistical confidence that comes from deep local knowledge.
What Makes Saudi Arabia Different as a Dive Destination
- Genuine wilderness: Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast received virtually no recreational diving visits for decades. The reefs are not just good — they are a window into what the Red Sea looked like before mass tourism.
- Pioneer experience: The thrill of diving sites that may have never hosted recreational divers before is genuine and impossible to replicate at more established destinations.
- Marine abundance: Fish biomass, coral coverage, and species diversity at Saudi sites consistently exceed what divers experience in Egypt, Jordan, or Djibouti — the difference is striking.
- Logistical exclusivity: The relative complexity of organising Saudi diving means that most sites are visited by only a handful of groups per year — ensuring uncrowded conditions and genuine expedition character.
DUNE's Saudi Arabia Programs
DUNE currently offers two core Saudi Arabia diving program types:
- Jeddah and Central Coast Program: A 7-10 day land-based program using Jeddah as a hub. Day-boat diving to local reefs provides an excellent introduction to Saudi Red Sea diving with maximum comfort and cultural immersion. Jeddah itself is a UNESCO World Heritage City with extraordinary historic and cultural appeal. Ideal for divers wanting their first Saudi Red Sea experience.
- Farasan Islands Liveaboard Expedition: DUNE's flagship Saudi program — a 10-14 day liveaboard expedition from Jizan covering the full Farasan Archipelago. This is genuinely frontier diving at its finest. Limited departures ensure exclusivity and maximum site quality. Suitable for experienced divers comfortable with remote expedition conditions.
Getting to Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is exceptionally well connected to Europe through Jeddah's King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) and Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport (RUH). Saudi Airlines, Air France, Lufthansa, British Airways, and numerous other carriers operate direct services. Flight time from major European cities is typically 6-8 hours.
For DUNE's Farasan Islands programs, international arrival into Jeddah is followed by a domestic connection to Jizan (GIZ), with departures to the liveaboard typically the same or following day. DUNE manages all domestic connections and transfers.
Visa and Entry Requirements
Saudi Arabia now offers an electronic tourist visa (e-visa) for citizens of most European and Western countries, obtainable online within minutes. The process is straightforward and DUNE provides complete guidance as part of our pre-departure documentation package. Validity is 90 days with multiple entry permitted.
Health and Practical Preparations
- No specialist vaccinations required beyond standard travel recommendations
- Dress code awareness: Saudi Arabia observes conservative dress codes, particularly outside resorts. DUNE provides specific guidance for each program's locations.
- Alcohol: Alcohol is not available in Saudi Arabia. DUNE's liveaboards are dry vessels; cold drinks, juices, and non-alcoholic beverages are freely available.
- Dive medical: A current dive medical certificate is required for all DUNE Saudi programs.
Best Season for Saudi Arabia Diving
- October to April (Optimal): Comfortable air temperatures (25-30°C), excellent water temperatures (22-26°C), and the best sea conditions. All DUNE programs are scheduled during this window.
- May to September: Extreme surface heat (40°C+) makes surface conditions uncomfortable. Diving quality remains excellent but not recommended for most visitors.
Experience Level Requirements
- Jeddah Land-Based Program: Open Water certification minimum; suitable for divers of all experience levels.
- Farasan Islands Liveaboard: Advanced Open Water minimum; previous liveaboard experience strongly recommended. Some sites require 50+ logged dives.
