Cape Kri: The World Record Dive
Cape Kri holds the Guinness World Record for the most fish species recorded on a single dive: 374 species in one survey conducted by Dr. Gerald Allen. This statistic alone earns Cape Kri a place on every serious diver's bucket list, but the lived experience of diving this site goes far beyond any statistic.
The cape is a rocky headland at the northern tip of Kri Island, and the dive is conducted as a drift along the current-swept reef wall. During an outgoing tide, the productivity of these waters becomes instantly apparent: impenetrable walls of glassfish part around you as you descend, schools of bigeye trevally circle overhead, and beneath the overhang of every coral shelf, a different community of reef fish has established its territory. Turtles, Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, white-tip sharks — Cape Kri delivers them all within a single, glorious dive.
Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge
Two sites bear the word "Manta" in their name in Raja Ampat's northern district, and both fully earn it. Manta Sandy is a shallow cleaning station on a sandy plateau where reef mantas queue up to be cleaned by wrasse and butterflyfish. Arriving at the site during the right tidal window, you can position yourself in the shallows and watch a steady procession of mantas — wings up to four metres across — circling just overhead, utterly unhurried.
Manta Ridge is a current-swept wall dive where mantas use the upwelling to soar effortlessly without expending energy. The interaction between multiple individuals — sometimes including juveniles — at this site has a social quality that reminds experienced divers of watching dolphins play in a bow wave.
Blue Magic: The Pelagic Magnet
Blue Magic, located in the Dampier Strait south of Waigeo Island, is one of Raja Ampat's most exciting open-water sites. A submerged seamount that rises from depth without breaking the surface, Blue Magic is a convergence point for strong currents that carry nutrients from the deep and attract pelagic species in extraordinary numbers.
A dive on Blue Magic during the right tidal conditions can yield encounters with manta rays, eagle rays, schools of hammerhead sharks, whale sharks (seasonal), and the constant backdrop of schooling fish in concentrations that darken the water column. The site requires experience in currents and familiarity with blue-water diving technique, but rewards with encounters that are simply unavailable on sheltered reef sites.
Misool: The Remote Southern Paradise
Misool, the southernmost district of Raja Ampat, is a world unto itself. The island group is characterised by mushroom-shaped limestone islets rising from turquoise lagoons, their flanks draped in tropical vegetation and their underwater foundations forming the foundations of some of the healthiest hard coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific.

The no-take zone around Misool, established and maintained by the Misool Foundation, has resulted in a reef system that demonstrates what Indonesian reefs can look like without fishing pressure. Fish density here is extraordinary and the absence of human disturbance is palpable — dives at Misool have a quality of stillness and abundance that feels almost primordial.
Sardine Reef and Arborek Jetty
Not every great dive in Raja Ampat requires strong currents and advanced experience. Sardine Reef, just off the village of Arborek, is a gentle, shallow reef teeming with small schooling fish, turtles, and an ever-changing cast of macro subjects. The Arborek Jetty itself is a beloved night dive site where the lights of the village attract plankton and predators — hunting squid, scorpionfish, ornate ghost pipefish, and the occasional flamboyant cuttlefish make a single night dive here worth the entire trip.
Pianemo and the Fam Islands
The Fam Islands, accessible in the northern part of the archipelago, offer the iconic Raja Ampat landscape photograph — mushroom islands reflected in mirror-calm water — combined with excellent diving in the channels between the islets. The Pianemo viewpoint, reached by climbing a wooden stairway to a limestone summit, delivers the panoramic view that has become the defining image of Raja Ampat. Below it, the diving is intimate and detailed: seahorses, reef fish, and garden eels in the sandy flats between coral heads.
Wayag: The Northern Wilderness
Wayag, at the far northern tip of the archipelago, is accessible only by longer liveaboard itineraries and requires extra navigation effort to reach. The reward is total isolation: pristine dive sites that see very few visitors, extraordinary topside scenery, and diving in an environment so undisturbed that large reef fish show almost no fear response to divers.
The lagoons around Wayag support significant populations of blacktip reef sharks, and the shallow reef flats are among the best places in Indonesia to encounter the epaulette walking shark on its remarkable excursions across the reef.
