The whale shark season is linked to the spawning of little tunny (Euthynnus alletteratus) off the Yucatan coast. The tuna spawn creates vast concentrations of fish eggs near the surface — precisely the kind of nutrient-dense, easily accessible food that whale sharks travel enormous distances to exploit.
The aggregation zone shifts between the coastal areas of Holbox (to the west) and the open waters around Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres (to the east), depending on where tuna spawning activity is most concentrated. What to Expect During Your Encounter
The Isla Holbox/Isla Mujeres whale shark experience is fundamentally a snorkelling encounter — an approach that serves the encounter well:
- Boats operate with early morning departures (typically 7-8 AM) from Isla Holbox or Cancun/Isla Mujeres.
- The boat crew scouts actively for whale sharks at the surface, visible from considerable distance when filter feeding.
- Snorkellers enter in groups of 2-3 with a guide and approach whale sharks from the side.
- Encounters typically last 15-30 minutes per interaction, with multiple individuals visited during each trip.
- On average days, 5-15 whale shark interactions are made per trip; on exceptional days, swimming alongside 30+ individuals simultaneously is possible.
Best Season and Timing
- June (Early Season): Numbers building; less reliable than peak months but encounters increasingly available from mid-June onward.
- July (Peak Season): Maximum whale shark concentrations; historically the most reliable month for large group encounters. DUNE's highest-demand month for Mexico whale shark programs.
- August (Peak Season): Continued high concentrations; aggregation often shifts eastward toward Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres.
- September (Late Season): Numbers declining as tuna spawn activity reduces; still worthwhile encounters, particularly in the first half of the month.
Responsible Whale Shark Interaction
DUNE works exclusively with operators complying with Mexico's official whale shark interaction regulations:
- Maximum 2 snorkellers plus 1 guide per whale shark at any given time
- Minimum 3-metre distance from the shark's body; 5 metres from the tail
- No sunscreen in the water (biodegradable reef-safe alternatives provided)
- No touching the sharks under any circumstances
- Strict boat positioning protocol to avoid surrounding or herding sharks
