Do I Need to Be Certified to Dive Indonesia?
The short answer is yes — formal dive certification from a recognised agency is required to dive on DUNE's Indonesia programmes, and this requirement exists entirely for your safety. Indonesia's finest diving sites include genuinely challenging environments — strong currents, significant depths, and occasionally limited visibility — that demand a solid foundation of diving skills and genuine awareness of your own physical and psychological limits.
But certification level requirements vary significantly between Indonesian destinations, and understanding what each destination demands helps you plan your progression realistically. Not every dive in Indonesia requires Advanced Open Water certification, and not every diver needs to rush into deep drift diving to experience what Indonesia has to offer.
Open Water Certification: Where You Can Start
PADI Open Water, SSI Open Water, or equivalent certification from any recognised agency qualifies you for the majority of diving available in Bali and the more sheltered sites of Raja Ampat. The USAT Liberty wreck at Tulamben is among the most beginner-friendly world-class dive sites anywhere — its maximum depth of thirty metres is within the Open Water limit with appropriate guidance, and its shallow sections are accessible from just three metres.
In Raja Ampat, Open Water divers can access the renowned cleaning stations at Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge, the rich reef gardens of Arborek, and many of the most celebrated sites in the northern district. The key limitation for Open Water divers in Raja Ampat is depth — many of the most spectacular sites require descent to 20-30 metres — and current, which at some sites exceeds the comfort zone appropriate for newer divers.
Advanced Open Water: Opening Up Indonesia
PADI Advanced Open Water, SSI Advanced Adventurer, or equivalent certification significantly expands your diving options across Indonesia. The five speciality dives required for Advanced certification typically include Peak Performance Buoyancy, Underwater Navigation, and often Drift Diving and Deep Diver — all of which are directly relevant to Indonesia's diving environments.

For divers progressing toward technical diving, the Enriched Air (Nitrox) certification is practically essential for Indonesian liveaboards. It is important to understand that certification alone does not guarantee readiness for Indonesia's more demanding dive sites. A newly certified Open Water diver with twenty training dives is technically qualified to dive but has accumulated very little real-world experience. The gap between the certification standard and the experience needed to dive comfortably in current-swept Indonesian waters is best filled by accumulating dives in your home country before your Indonesia trip.
DUNE recommends a minimum of fifty logged dives before undertaking an Indonesian liveaboard, and at least twenty-five dives with drift diving experience before booking a Komodo itinerary. These are not arbitrary numbers — they reflect the experience base that, in our observation over twenty-five years, correlates with guests who dive safely, enjoy themselves fully, and don't create safety concerns for other guests on the vessel.
