Understanding Bull Sharks at Playa del Carmen
Bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) are among the most powerful of all shark species — robust, muscular animals reaching 2-3 metres in length, distinguished by their blunt, rounded snout and stocky build. Uniquely adapted to survive in both saltwater and freshwater environments, they are found worldwide in warm coastal waters.
The gathering at Playa del Carmen is believed to be a pregnant female congregation, with females finding the warm shallow Mexican Caribbean ideal for the final stages of gestation. The concentration peaks between November and March, with January and February typically offering the highest shark densities.
The Dive Experience
Bull shark diving is conducted at a site called the Shark Hole or Snapper Hole, approximately 2 kilometres offshore at 25-30 metres depth. The diving protocol involves:
- Entry from a boat and descent to the sandy bottom
- Divers kneel or crouch in a semicircle at the reef edge, maintaining still, non-threatening postures
- Bull sharks approach freely, typically to within 2-5 metres, circling and investigating without aggression
- Dives typically last 30-40 minutes, with 3-8 bull sharks typically present
On peak days, 10-20 bull sharks have been counted at a single site — an extraordinary wildlife spectacle essentially unique to this location in its combination of accessibility, numbers, and natural (non-baited) conditions.

- November: Season begins as water cools slightly; shark numbers build through the month. Good conditions, fewer tourists than peak months.
- December: Shark numbers increasing rapidly; reliable encounters.
- January: Peak month for shark abundance. DUNE considers this the optimal month — maximum shark numbers with excellent diving conditions.
- February: Typically the second-highest shark density month; excellent conditions continuing.
- March: Season winding down as pregnant females move toward birthing areas. Still excellent encounters but numbers declining through the month.
