The Um El Faroud is the most famous artificial wreck in Malta and one of the best in the Mediterranean. This 110-meter Libyan oil tanker was deliberately sunk in 1998 to create an artificial reef for diving. Its massive structure, which starts at 9 meters and descends to 25 meters, is ideal for all levels. Exceptional Mediterranean visibility and abundant marine life make it a remarkable photographic site. Groupers, red mullets and various Mediterranean species have colonized the wreck.
The MT Um El Faroud was an oil tanker belonging to the Libyan National Oil Corporation. On February 3, 1995, during cleaning work in Valletta port, a gas explosion killed nine Maltese workers. The ship, too damaged to be repaired economically, was purchased by the Maltese government. After careful cleaning to remove any pollutants, it was deliberately sunk on September 3, 1998 off Wied iz-Zurrieq. This transformation of a tragedy into a diving resource became an example for other Mediterranean countries.
