The SS Yongala is considered one of the ten best dives in the world. This Australian passenger ship has rested since 1911 off Queensland, in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. The 109-meter wreck is enveloped in extraordinary marine life: sea snakes, giant turtles, giant manta rays, impressive groupers, and dense schools of tropical fish. The strong current that regularly sweeps the site guarantees a constant supply of nutrients and exceptional fauna. An unforgettable dive in a dreamlike setting.
The SS Yongala was a passenger ship of the Adelaide Steamship Company operating regular services between Melbourne and Cairns. On March 23, 1911, caught in a violent tropical cyclone, it disappeared with its 122 passengers and crew members. The wreck was not found until 1958 after years of searching. Its history remained uncertain for a long time because the captain was unaware of the cyclone warning, radio communications not yet being mandatory. Today, this ship is listed as Australian national heritage and benefits from strict protection. Diving there is supervised to preserve this unique site.
