The Salem Express is one of the most poignant wrecks in the Red Sea, site of one of the worst maritime disasters in the region. This ferry rests at 20 to 30 meters depth on its port side. Diving on this wreck is an intense and introspective experience. Advanced divers come here to pay tribute to the victims. The interior still contains personal effects that recall the human tragedy. Marine fauna has colonized the cabins and engine room, creating a striking contrast between the tragedy and underwater beauty.
The MV Salem Express was a ro-ro ferry carrying pilgrims returning from the Hajj. During the night of December 15-16, 1991, caught in a storm, it struck the Hyndman reef near Safaga. The ship sank within minutes, taking with it between 462 and 700 people according to sources. Only 180 people were rescued. This maritime disaster remains one of the deadliest in the Mediterranean and Red Sea. Out of respect for the victims, many diving operators ask their clients not to enter the wreck.
