The PBY Catalina is a unique wreck: an American World War II seaplane resting at 35 to 42 meters in the waters of Ambon, Indonesia. The characteristic silhouette of this twin-hulled aircraft is still perfectly recognizable despite the decades spent underwater. The wreck is covered in corals and harbors impressive marine fauna. Reserved for experienced divers due to its depth, this dive offers a unique window into Pacific history. A rare site, still little known to the general public.
The PBY Catalina was an American patrol seaplane produced in large quantities during World War II. Used throughout the Pacific for reconnaissance, bombing, and rescue missions, it played a crucial role in the Allied strategy. This example sank in 1945 in Ambon Bay, a theater of intense fighting between American and Japanese forces. The waters of Ambon contain several wrecks from this period, witnesses to the ferocity of combat in the South Pacific. The Catalina is the most impressive among them for its size and state of preservation.
