The KRI Kutilang, formerly USS Orestes, is a World War II wreck lying in the extraordinary waters of Raja Ampat, in West Papua. This military vessel rests at 18 to 29 meters in one of the planet's richest marine ecosystems. The wreck is entirely covered with hard and soft corals, giant sponges and incredible marine life. Moderate currents attract varied pelagic fauna. Diving on this wreck in the exceptional setting of Raja Ampat is an unforgettable experience.
The USS Orestes was an American auxiliary vessel commissioned in 1919. During World War II, it was transferred to the Dutch navy and then to the newly independent Indonesian navy, under the name KRI Kutilang. It sank in the waters of Raja Ampat in 1942 under circumstances related to Pacific combat. Rediscovered much later, when Raja Ampat opened to diving in the 2000s, the wreck was inventoried as a remarkable site in this region recognized as the global center of marine biodiversity.
