The Giannis D is one of the most accessible wrecks in the Red Sea, beginning at only 3 meters depth. This Greek cargo ship that ran aground in 1983 on the Sha'ab Abu Nuhas reef offers spectacular diving with its still well-preserved architecture. The emerged bow is visible at the surface, giving the site a unique dramatic appearance. The interior of the holds is accessible and reveals abundant marine life. It is a perfect site for underwater photography and advanced level snorkeling.
The Giannis D was a Greek cargo ship built in 1969, initially sailing under the name Shoho Maru. On April 19, 1983, it came too close to the infamous Sha'ab Abu Nuhas reef, sadly known for its shipwrecks. On board were tons of eucalyptus wood. The wreck split into two parts: the bow ran aground on the reef at shallow depth, while the stern sank at 27 meters. The Giannis D is today one of the best-preserved wrecks in the region.
