The Carnatic is one of the oldest wrecks in the Red Sea, offering a dive into Victorian history. This sailing and steam passenger ship rests at 15 to 27 meters on the Sha'ab Abu Nuhas reef. Its metal structure, covered with multicolored corals and giant sponges, is of absolute beauty. The two still-standing masts welcome schools of barracudas and sea turtles. The upper deck at 15 meters is accessible to all levels, while the deep holds require more experience.
Built in 1862 by the Blackwall shipyards, the SS Carnatic was a mixed sail-and-steam passenger ship of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. On September 12, 1869, carrying gold ingots, mail, and 230 people, it ran aground on the Sha'ab Abu Nuhas reef. Although evacuation began, a storm occurred the following night and the ship broke in two. 27 people lost their lives. The gold cargo was never fully recovered, fueling legends of sunken treasures.
