The British Loyalty is a remarkable wreck resting in the southernmost atoll of the Maldives, Addu Atoll. This British World War II oil tanker lies at 30 to 33 meters depth, in remarkably rich waters. The massive structure of the ship is lined with corals and sponges, providing habitat for hundreds of species. Reef sharks and barracudas are regular presences. Addu's remoteness from the rest of the Maldives guarantees diving far from crowds, in an exceptionally preserved setting.
The SS British Loyalty was an oil tanker of British Petroleum, built in 1928. During World War II, it was hit by a Japanese torpedo in 1944 while anchored in Addu Lagoon. Severely damaged but still afloat, it was towed and deliberately sunk in 1946 to avoid obstructing the navigation passages. This pragmatic action transformed a logistical problem into a future treasure of world diving. Rediscovered in the 1990s with the opening of Addu Atoll to tourism, it is today one of the best-kept secrets of the Maldives.
